What vegetables are good to cook as a side dish in the Fall?
With the arrival of cooler weather and the abundance of seasonal produce, Fall is the perfect time to experiment with new and delicious vegetable side dishes:
Butternut Squash: One vegetable that is quintessentially associated with Fall is the butternut squash. This versatile vegetable can be roasted, sautéed, or pureed, making it an excellent addition to any Fall menu. Its savory, slightly sweet flavor pairs well with a variety of spices and herbs, making it a great base for soups, casseroles, and even as a topping for pizza.
Brussels Sprouts: Another fall favorite is Brussels sprouts. These tiny green cabbages become sweeter and more tender when roasted, making them the perfect side dish for any autumn meal. They also lend themselves well to other cooking methods, such as sautéing or braising. With their earthy and nutty flavor, Brussels sprouts are delicious when seasoned with Fall herbs like sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Root vegetables: Root vegetables are also abundant during the Fall season and make for hearty and comforting side dishes. Carrots, parsnips, turnips, and sweet potatoes can all be roasted or mashed to create a flavorful and satisfying addition to any Fall meal. They pair well with Fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and can even serve as a base for savory dishes like stews or pot pies.
