Directions

1. To make the creamy chicken pasta soup: In a large Dutch oven, add the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic, and saute in olive oil until tender and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add cooked chicken and continue cooking for 3 minutes, stirring regularly.

2. Add the broth, heavy cream, and cream cheese. Cover and bring to a boil, then cook for 15 minutes.

3. Lower the heat, add pasta and cheddar, and simmer until pasta is cooked to your liking. Add spinach to the chicken pasta soup toward the end, and stir until wilted.

4. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and black pepper. Serve the creamy chicken pasta soup in bowls and top with extra parmesan cheese if desired. Enjoy!

Note: If you like a thinner chicken pasta soup, you can cook pasta on the side, add it to the soup at the end, and reheat before serving.

What other pasta is best for chicken soup?

Traditional egg noodles, broken spaghetti, rotini, macaroni, or whatever you have on hand! This chicken pasta soup recipe is very forgiving, so you can use whatever pasta you like.

Can we make this pasta soup lower in carbs?

Yes! Instead of noodles, you can add zucchini noodles or sweet potato noodles for a lower-carb option. Toss them toward the end of cooking time, so they can absorb some juice without breaking up.

Can we make this chicken noodle soup ahead of time?

You can prepare this chicken pasta soup in advance and store it in the fridge but do not add the pasta until you are serving it. Adding the noodles or pasta to the chicken soup before serving will swell up and become mushy. So add the pasta when you reheat the soup for serving, and adjust the consistency with more chicken stock if necessary.

Also, remember that this soup won’t freeze well because it contains dairy, which tends to separate and curdle when reheated.

What other readers are saying about this chicken pasta soup recipe

“This soup is so yummy! I cooked the pasta separately, spooned so into each bowl then ladled soup over it. This way the pasta didn’t absorb all the liquid when it was in the fridge overnight! You can even eat this soup without pasta, it’s that good.” – Christina

“Made this for Sunday dinner. It is very easy and really very quick to make. My men loved it. All of them!” – Jalee

“Everyone loved it and that never happens! I had to add more broth because the noodles really soaked it up but it was soooo good!” – Bonnie

“Super easy to make! A big hit with the kids.” – Iris

Wow what a yummy soup!!! I made it almost exactly as the recipe said. Didn't need to add salt as it was salty enough. The soup was not "soupy" enough, so I had to add at least a cup of 2% milk, a little more whipping cream and cheese and peppered to taste. Super cheesy taste! Thank you!

I wanted to rate it 5 stars because it’s so delicious! But for the amount of soup, 2 cups of pasta is way too much. The soup got so thick, I had to keep adding chicken broth to it. And it’s still too thick. I think 1 cup of pasta would have been plenty enough. I will only add 1 cup next time.

This recipe is delicious!! Since I follow a healthier diet, I made a few substitutions. I swapped the cream cheese for plain Greek yogurt and heavy cream for half and half. I also chose reduced fat mild cheddar cheese. These changes definitely gave the appearance of wedding soup kind of but it was just as delicious!! I will definitely be making again (:

My husband and I loved this, will definitely make again. The only thing I failed to read the part in the recipe is if it is to thick you can add extra chicken broth which was my fault. Thank you for sharing.

This was good BUT…..it had WAY too much pasta and not enough liquid!! So….less pasta….maybe a 1/2 to3/4 cup and 4 cups of stock and 1 cup heavy cream! No one in my family wants a stew instead of a soup…of which this was no soup!

Just made this. It was very good and I will definitely be making it again. Mine was not as soupy, but it was still delicious~

If you cook already cooked chicken this long it will get really tough. I added with spinach at the end and it was good. Good recipe flavors, just needed some tweaks in my opinion. Also used less cream cheese.

    2023-06-07 15:45:36

This was absolutely delicious. I used egg noodles instead and used 4 oz of cream cheese. I also added a side of toasted bakery bread with butter to dip in the soup. Fantastic!

I would have given this 10 stars - no 20! - if I could! I'm not a soup person, but this was a dining experience! So rich and creamy with a great balance of flavors! This would be wonderful for a special winter dinner it's that good!

  • Sarah

    2023-01-31 14:22:38

We really enjoyed this soup and I will definitely make it again. I made a few changes to make it low calorie, but it was still delicious. I added a sweet potato peeled and diced and sautéed it with other vegetables. I used half and half instead of heavy cream. I didn’t had shredded cheese and used 1/2 cup of 1/3 less fat cream cheese. I also added Italian seasoning and cooked noodles separately and added them in as we served it.

    2022-11-17 08:47:11

I have now made this soup 2x. Absolutely delicious! I made it just like the recipe calls for. I did cook the pasta in with the soup and it absorbed all the broth. So much that I ended up adding 8 cups of broth instead of 4, but the pasta was not mushy at all and as another commenter mentioned it is more like a casserole. I also only had arugula on hand so that went in in place of the spinach. Next time I will only add 1 cup of pasta instead of 2 and see how that works. This is one of the best recipes I have ever tried!

  • Bese

    2022-11-11 20:19:40

So so good!! I omitted the spinach but everything else I used. So yummy and hearty. My husband approves! Super easy to make. I had to add water because one box of broth wasn’t enough, it wasn’t soupy enough.

Delicious, fast, and easy to make. My partner wasn’t feeling so well so I made this for him and he really liked it. Added a cup of water because mine got really thick from the chicken but overall amazing and would make it again :)

So far love it Used 1/3 fat cream cheese, half and half, and culinary stock- no salt added, red pepper flakes too. Very yummy. Lower fat and lower sodium. Added pasta as we ate. Would definitely make again.

Love this soup. Two things though - I takes way way way longer than 30 minutes. That may be the cooking time, but there is a lot of chopping. Also, it does indeed freeze very well. I keep quart sized containers in my freezer - excellent thawed and warmed up slowly.

  • Kassidy

    2022-08-07 18:56:27

Really good! Also, mine didn’t have liquid while serving like the picture had, but used the right amount of ingredients. Anything I should’ve done differently?

    2022-05-02 12:52:57

LOVE LOVE LOVE this soup it’s my favorite. One thing I do different ,I don’t put my chicken in the beginning Bc for some reason it sticks to the bottom of the pot other than that I wish is was less fattening but that’s not going to stop me from making and eating it 🤣🤣😋😋😋😋😋😋

Delish!! Best soup/chowder I’ve made in a long time! I added some cubed sweet potato that I had leftover, and it just made it more hearty. Will keep this in my meal rotation!

    2022-03-13 08:31:48

I made this soup last night and it was a big hit. My daughter said this is the best soup of any kind of soup I made before. The pasta did absorb alot of the broth so I will cook it on the side next time as I wanted the soup a bit thinner. Great flavor and I used a rotisserie chicken from the deli to save time. Can't wait to make it agai!

  • Lisa

    2022-02-10 12:40:09

This was a really yummy soup! Instead of cream cheese, I used one wheel of Boursin cheese just becuase I happened to have it. I did cook the pasta seperately, but mixed into the soup pot after it was off the heat. I left out the spinach (just a personal preference). To reheat, I just added a few small pours of broth to thin it out a bit. Leftovers tasted delicious! Definitely a keeper. Thank you :-)

    2022-02-05 21:16:37

This was a very good recipe. I started out making a different soup that was very similar but it tasted rather bland. Then I read this recipe added the cheddar cheese & cream cheese, which really helped the flavor, also added some chicken bouillon, garlic salt, pepper & thyme. At the end I added the spinach and brought to a boil. My husband & i decided we didn’t want any pasta so I didn’t make any. We did eat some biscuits with it, we are big bread eaters. Thanks for the recipe will add to our list.

Wow. This is really good soup, what we call in my house, "restaurant worthy"! I added some peas and green beans, added more liquid because it was getting too thick, and it was awesome. Thanks for a great recipe!

  • Amanda M

    2022-01-25 15:05:09

Amazing! Used a rustic egg noodle type of pasta that I broke into smaller pieces and it was delicious. By the time the noodles absorbed enough liquid to be cooked it was similar to a loose casserole more than a soup but we loved it that way! Next time I'll just add more liquid to counter the absorption.

    Made it for tonight!!! Delicious…

Easy Peasy. I did add a bouillon cube for extra flavor per sister. It really makes a lot my husband had me make him catfish stew. I cannot eat all of this. I noticed someone asked if this could be frozen, but I haven't seen a response. I would like to freeze.

  • Kim

    2022-01-08 17:54:39

I made this soup today and yes, it was delicious. I was worried about the nutritional value so I used more veggies, half-and-half instead of heavy cream, and only a cup of the shredded cheese and it was still very tasty with just a little less fat and cholesterol. It is the perfect soup on a cold wintry day or perfect for a Superbowl party instead of chili. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

    2022-01-07 18:00:27

Was delish except next time I'll cook my pasta 1st it took too much time to cook in the cream sauce & sauce seemed to be sticky to bottom of pan...I was a little hesitant to add uncooked but wanted to follow recipe since my 1st time making...but good flavor & nice change from chicken noodle soup...I'll make again! As Frankie says...My Way😉

    2021-12-28 16:38:50

I love this recipe, I think I've made it three times now. It's a great base and a good excuse to clean out the veggie drawer. Most recently I used hot Italian sausage instead of chicken and it was a fun twist. Like other reviews, I cooked pasta on the side and added it before serving. I've also been adding fresh thyme and one bay leaf. Super good!

  • Sarah

    2021-12-10 22:31:22

I mainly followed the recipe but was wondering if it would have enough flavor so I added a couple sprigs of fresh thyme, 3 fresh sage leaves and a bay leaf. I used about 3/4 of the cream cheese, and added a little extra stock to thin the broth. As many other reviewers suggested, I left out the pasta and will add before serving. Also, I accidentally bought the full sodium chicken stock so I left out the salt and don’t feel the need to add any additional. I just did a taste test from the pot and said “Damn, that’s good!!” out loud!! Cannot wait for my hun bun to try it! Thanks for this recipe!!

    2021-11-03 18:47:54

This a very creamy, delicious soup. I was getting ready to put into bowls and realized I had not put in cheddar cheese. I added it and while it was good with the cheese I personally think it was better without. Maybe let people decide for themselves and put it on as a garnish

  • Lisa

    2021-11-03 15:47:11

Love this recipe. Definitely cook the pasta separately so the soup is actually a soup texture. Will definitely make again, the family all loved it!

  • Rosa

    2021-10-28 20:36:48

This recipe was a hit! I made this for work as the food in our cafeteria is not all that. I made some rolls to go with it. My best friend and I both loved it. I added more that the recommended veggies and less of the noodles. Yum!

  • Lindsey

    2021-10-17 11:50:07

Recipe is really good, me and my boyfriend love it! However, I would advise against cooking the pasta in the broth and recommend cooking it on the side separately instead. If you cook the pasta in the soup, it absorbs all the broth and the soup becomes basically heavy cream soup (super concentrated and stomach ache inducing). I would also say it takes longer to cook than the recipe says in order to get the celery and carrots soft. Other than that it’s perfect!

  • Patty

    2021-10-16 17:46:23

My husband and I loved this soup. Will definitely make it again. I did alter the recipe slightly by using half and half instead of heavy cream, only using half of the cream cheese and an extra carton of chicken stock. The broth was absorbed by the pasta, so the additional stock or broth is necessary.

  • Robin

    2021-10-06 18:37:03

This recipe needs to be overhauled with seasoning. A bay leaf thyme oregano and paprika really leveled up the flavor!!

  • steffi

    2021-09-15 20:05:46

This was very good. I did read reviews and followed some of them. I used 1 1/2 cups pasta and still think that was a little too much. I added 1/2 cup extra cream and 1 extra can of broth. I think it was too soupy. Next time I will not add more broth. I added thyme, a bay leaf, and parsley. I reduced the cream cheese to a third of a bar. It was very tasty and we enjoyed it! I agree with BC... took WAY more than 5 minutes prep time-LOL. And I let it simmer much longer!

  • BC

    2021-07-18 16:22:35

Very good. I must be very slow though. Cooking the chicken and chopping the vegetables took way longer than the 5 minutes of prep time indicated 😂

    2021-06-04 00:35:33

Found this recipe and made it, absolutely finger licking till the last drop!! I made mine with shredded chicken and added more garlic and some mushrooms. Used recommended amount of broth, cream cheese & cheddar, perfecto! Tasted just like the one my mom used to make for us growing up. So comforting, loved it!

  • Jackie

    2021-04-22 11:55:51

Used a rotisserie chicken🙄 and also cooked ditalini separately. Soup came out delicious....thank you for sharing the recipe

  • Barb Clough

    2021-03-27 20:25:00

Loved this & so did my family! Did follow some other reviews -cooked pasta separately (mini shells), cut cream cheese in half and added a bit more broth. Had a small amount (maybe 1/3 c) of cooked chorizo so added that and a shake of Zatarain’s Creole spice mix. Only had extra sharp cheddar so used that. Just delicious!

  • Katie

    2021-03-24 17:49:19

I agree with most of the other reviews that the flavor was great, but it if you follow the directions exactly as shown, it becomes more like a casserole and way too thick. They should have noted that the pictures of the “soup” on the recipe is based on cooking the pasta separately and probably having more broth/cream. They mention that you can do that at the end for a thinner soup, but when I see a picture of what I’m making, I am led to believe that the directions I’m following will give me a meal that looks like picture! If you want it to be more of a soup, definitely cook the noodles separately and add more broth!

  • Marnie

    2021-03-20 04:24:51

Absolutely beautiful and winner for who ate. Served it as a thinner soup rather than a thinker pasta sauce. Will be repeating as we enter the winter. Thank you.

  • Kaley R.

    2021-03-18 12:36:38

This soup is so good! I definitely recommend cooking the noodles separately because cooking them in the broth thickens it up SO much that it feels like you're not having soup. I add extra chicken broth, cream cheese & whipping cream to have extra broth & it makes it more creamy! One of my favorite soup recipes for sure!

  • Emma

    2021-03-04 08:41:37

This recipe was so delicious and perfect for eating with bread bowls! However, the noodles absorbed most of the broth even though I was very generous with the 4 cups. I'm looking forward to trying this recipe again, but I'll definitely add more broth and heavy cream next time.

  • Kathy

    2021-03-02 16:01:49

  • Donna

    2021-02-04 13:44:16

Although this was a very tasty recipe, I am going to only add half of the pasta to make it more like a soup. It came out way too thick so I added more chicken broth.

Excellent flavor! I agree that the original recipe comes out too thick. I added mushrooms because I'm a fungus freak. And a little extra garlic for flavor. I will definitely make again adding more broth. Should've read the comments before making, but still very much edible :)

Delicious recipe for a cool December day! Serving it with a thick slice of crusty artisan bread. I doubled the broth to 8 cups and it's still super thick- looks more like creamy mac & cheese. Next time I'll try using 1 cup of pasta instead of 2.

  • Bree

This soup was pretty good. I had to add 7 cups of broth to make it more like soup, like others have said, or else it was way too thick. I didn't have celery so I added extra carrots. I put a 1/2 cup parmesan in the soup because I only had a cup of cheese on hand. I was also out of garlic cloves so I had to use garlic powder. It still came out tasty!

So good! I just made this last night for my family and they loved it! We were sick of making the same thing every week during quarantine. I would probably only add 1 cup of pasta to make it more like soup next time. Otherwise, it's a winner!

This was sooo good. It came out more of like a creamy pasta than a soup though but I added extra cheese! We love cheese here. It was amazing regardless though. Definitely a keeper in this house.

This soup is delicious! I’ve made it probably 6 times in the last 2 months. Highly recommend using a rotisserie chicken. I tried making it with baked chicken but wasn’t nearly as good. I made 4 batches and froze them this time. Make sure when you freeze not to add pasta, cheddar cheese or spinach. Delicious! Thank you!

Great soup! Very visually appealing! Great taste! Once I souped it up! We are Cajun and require a pop of flavor in every bite. I found it to be a bit bland after following the directions. So I added garlic and onion powder, plus some Tony Chachere’s. I also addded some chicken soup seasoning and salt and pepper. I was trying this soup out to see if I wanted to make it for Christmas. And yes, I think it will do just fine as a side dish for my Cajun Christmas dinner!

Had really good flavor. But 4 cups of broth definitely not used in pictures for recipe. I would strongly recommend 6 cups of broth and cut the cream cheese to 5 ounces. Will make again with changes.

We absolutely love this recipe in my house. I've made it several times. I always add much more chicken broth, a little more garlic, and I leave out the celery. Celery is a very overpowering flavor to me, so I've started leaving it out of most things. I love to make some nice homemade crusty bread to go with this soup.

Have made this twice and Love it! Shared with family members during quarantine and the girls loved it. We say it’s a “Girl Soup”. I added about twice the chicken broth to make more broth. Delicious!

Loved the flavor! I used the whole box of pasta which was about 3 cups rather than 2 and I added an extra cup of broth to compensate... like someone else mentioned, it turned out like creamy pasta, not soup. So keep that in mind if you decide to add more pasta! Next time I will add more broth and a little less pasta because it was really good! Just was looking for soup rather than pasta. My fault 😬

Pretty delicious. I would recommend using 6 cups of chicken stock at least. I used 5 and there wasn’t enough soup to really call it soup, more like a moist pasta dish.

Excellent, home cooked meal with a short turn around time to get dinner on the table! I cut most of the cheese and cream for a lighter option but it still remained creamy and delicious!
