We often have to clean mushrooms to remove any dirt before cooking:
1. Start by wiping off any dirt on the mushrooms with a damp paper towel.
2. If the mushrooms are particularly dirty, you can gently rinse them under cold running water. Make sure to pat them dry with a paper towel afterward.
3. If you are using button mushrooms, trim off the ends of the stems with a knife.
4. If you are using shiitake or cremini mushrooms, remove the tough stem with a paring knife.
5. Slice the mushrooms into desired sizes and they are ready to use! Let’s get cooking some mushrooms!
6 ways to cook mushrooms
Mushrooms are very easy to cook and you can accommodate them in many ways:
- Sautéing: Heat a pan over medium-high heat and add butter or oil. Add mushrooms and cook until lightly browned, stirring occasionally.
- Roasting: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Place mushrooms on a baking sheet and drizzle with oil, salt, and pepper. Roast for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Grilling: Brush mushrooms with oil, salt, and pepper and place on a hot grill. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until lightly charred.
- Stir-Frying: Heat a wok or large skillet over high heat and add oil. Add mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
- Steaming: Place mushrooms in a steamer basket and steam for 5-7 minutes, or until tender.
- Marinating: Place mushrooms in a shallow dish and cover with a marinade of your choice. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before cooking.
