Directions

1. To make the homemade guacamole: Cut the 3 avocados in half lengthwise, remove the pits, and scrape the avocados’ flesh out with a tablespoon. Place avocado flesh in a medium bowl and mash avocados with a fork until you get a chunky consistency.

2. Squeeze 3 tablespoons of fresh lime juice directly over the mashed avocado while prepping the rest of your ingredients. It’s good for the taste, and this will ensure the avocado doesn’t blacken!

3. Add diced tomatoes, onion, and chopped cilantro. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Add mayo and stir just until combined and serve the homemade guacamole immediately. Enjoy!

Tips for the homemade guacamole recipe

This guacamole recipe is straightforward to make whenever your guac craving strikes. Here are a few tips to make it even better:

  • Feel free to add a spicy kick with chili powder, Cayenne, or red chili flakes.
  • Swap sweet onion instead of red onion for a milder taste.
  • Don’t skimp on the salt; otherwise, you’ll end up with a bowl of bland guacamole. We recommend starting with 1/2 teaspoon of salt for every 3 avocados and then adding more to taste if you feel it’s necessary.
  • Add a touch of cumin to your guacamole seasoning for a nice flavor twist.

Can we prep the guacamole ahead?

Sure, you can whip up a batch of guacamole a day ahead. Oxygen in the air will cause avocado to be brown, preserving the guacamole by wrapping it with plastic directly over the surface, pushing out all extra air. Guacamole tastes best enjoyed within a day of making it, so don’t wait too much!

What avocado works best for making homemade guacamole?

If you want your guacamole for the same day, then select perfectly ripe avocados. If you are shopping ahead in a day or two, you can get firmer avocados and let them ripen.

  • For ripe avocados: Ripe avocados should have stems attached, and you should be able to push the sides in slightly with your fingertips.
  • Overly soft avocados or avocados with missing stems are more likely to have browned on the inside. It’s best to avoid them altogether.
  • To ripen hard avocados: place underripe avocados in a paper bag with an apple or banana – which releases ethylene gasses to speed up ripening– and leave at room temperature for 2-3 days.

Can we freeze guacamole?

We would not recommend freezing guacamole. The taste, texture, and consistency will be largely affected, with the other veggies becoming soggy.  You are better off just making your homemade guacamole from scratch; it’s so much fun!
