To get rid of grit, pesticides, and germs, put everything in a colander first. Then rub fruit and vegetables gently under cool running water before using . If something is extra-dirty—or has a thick skin—scrub stubborn bits off with a vegetable brush or sponge. For delicate fruits or vegetables like salad, tomatoes, berries, soak in water with a few drops of vinegar, then rinse under cold water.
