1. To make the edible cookie dough: Add butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar to a medium mixing bowl, sprinkle salt evenly over.

2. Using an electric hand mixer whip the dough together until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

3. Mix in 1 1/2 tablespoon milk and the vanilla extract.

4. Add in the treated flour and blend until just combined. Add a little milk if necessary, to get to the desired consistency.

Tips for the edible chocolate chips cookie dough recipe

Most of the ingredients found in edible cookie dough are the same as the ingredients in your regular cookie dough. There are a few differences though:

  • No eggs: Raw eggs present danger of food poisoning, so this edible cookie dough recipe does not include them.
  • No rising agents: You don’t need rising agents such as baking soda or baking powder because you don’t bake the cookies! Plus, raw baking powder and baking soda leave a strong aftertaste.
  • Heat-treated flour: When making edible cookie dough, you have to first toast the flour in the oven at 355ºF for at least 5 minutes to kill any potential bacteria.

Why heat-treating the edible cookie dough flour?

Eating raw flour is not the safest. In recent years people have found that raw flour can cause stomach issues so it’s better to heat treat your flour before making edible cookie dough to eliminate any bacteria and be safe. Check below for this easy process.

How to heat treat flour

Preheat your oven to 355ºF (180ºC). Evenly spread 3 cups of all-purpose flour onto a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 7 minutes or until flour registers 160ºF (71ºC). Allow the flour to cool completely, then store in an airtight container.
