Crispy on the outside, melting in the inside – You get the best of both worlds! These melt-in-your-mouth baked sweet potatoes are tossed in butter, salt, pepper, and cinnamon, then baked in the oven for a luscious side dish with minimal effort. The key here is the thickness consistency: too thin, and you get sweet potato chips with burnt edges, too thick, and you get a regular baked sweet potato. We found that the preferred range lies between 3/4- to 1-inch-thick sweet potato rounds. They’re perfect with roasted poultry or beef roasts – a must for the holidays. Enjoy!

How to bake the sweet potatoes

This recipe is easy, and sweet potatoes cook quickly because we’re slicing them to even thickness. This is good for the roasting time AND the presentation!

  • Prep the sweet potatoes – Preheat the oven to 4250F (220ºC) and arrange sliced sweet potatoes on a baking sheet. Drizzle with melted butter, season with salt, pepper, and cinnamon, then toss to coat and spread in a single layer.
  • Bake  – Bake the sweet potato rounds, flipping once, until crisp on the edges and tender inside.
  • Finish & serve – Transfer the sweet potatoes to a platter, garnish with thyme, and serve warm.

Tips for the baked sweet potatoes recipe

These baked sweet potatoes are a gorgeous side dish that pairs well with so many festive meals.

  • You will love these baked sweet potatoes with roasted chicken or turkey, roast pork, or a juicy prime rib.
  • Swap fresh rosemary instead of thyme if you prefer.
  • Make sure to cut the sweet potatoes into approximately the same size so they bake evenly. If you like them thicker, increase the roasting time by 10 minutes.

How to make ahead

You can prep the sliced sweet potatoes, arrange them on the baking sheet, and cover with foil or wrap in plastic until ready to bake. When ready, take them out of the refrigerator and follow the recipe: melted butter, salt, pepper, and cinnamon, then bake.

Topping Ideas

These sweet potatoes are great on their own, but feel free to add some toppings for added crunch and flavor. Our suggestions:

  • Toasted pecans, walnuts, pine nuts
  • Fresh rosemary, sage
  • Sichuan pepper
  • Salt flakes
  • Honey, maple syrup, brown sugar
