Healthy, budget-friendly, and versatile, steel-cut oats are a breakfast powerhouse you can customize to suit your taste for a nutritious start to the day. Because steel cut oats are less processed than rolled, quick, or instant oats, they are tougher and tend to take longer to cook (thus the processed solutions with rolled oats, instant oats, etc). This is where the handy Instant Pot comes into play! If you’re looking for a wholesome breakfast to start your day, try this quick and easy method for cooking steel-cut oats in the Instant Pot. Enjoy!

Directions

1. To make the Instant Pot steel cut oat: Add steel-cut oats, water, milk (or dairy-free milk), coconut oil, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon to the Instant Pot and stir to combine.

2. Pressure cook on high for 6 minutes.

3. Once the Instant Pot timer goes off, allow to sit to release pressure for 10 minutes, then turn the pressure valve to release any remaining pressure. Carefully remove the lid once the steam has been fully released.

4. Stir the steel-cut oats with a wooden spoon.

5. Enjoy the Instant Pot steel cut oats with your favorite toppings. ❤️

Tips for the Instant Pot Steel-Cut Oats

  • I like to saute the steel-cut oats with a small knob of butter for a couple of minutes to add a nutty flavor before adding the other ingredients.
  • If your oats look watery after cooking. That’s perfectly ok! Give the mixture a good stir, and the excess liquid will incorporate into the oats.
  • Feel free to use just water if you’re not into the creamy stuff ;) Replace 1 cup of milk with one more cup of water.
  • Topping suggestions: almonds, fresh or frozen berries, banana slices, chia seeds, raisins, maple syrup, honey, etc…
  • The ingredient ratio works best in a 6-quart Instant Pot (or a smaller one). If you’re using a larger Instant Pot, you can scale up the recipe to prevent any annoying burning and sticking to the bottom.
