How to clean mushrooms before cooking? Well, we simply have to run them under cold tap water, right? No! Mushrooms are like little sponges and washing them with water can change their taste and texture. And the last thing you want is getting slimy mushrooms! Learn how to clean mushrooms before cooking without water!

How to clean mushrooms

  • Wipe each mushroom over with a damp paper towel or a soft brush to remove loose dirt and debris.
  • Lightly rinse under cold water and thoroughly pat dry with paper towels.
  • Don’t soak mushrooms as they will absorb water like a sponge and won’t brown during cooking. You’ll end up with steamed mushrooms!

Tips for cooking mushrooms

  • Find mushrooms that are about the same size to ensure even cooking.
  • If you start your recipe by sautéing mushrooms, don’t turn them too much at the beginning. Let them brown and crisp nicely on all sides before stirring or adding to a sauce. The flavor for any mushroom sauce starts with browning mushrooms properly!
