The Houston Community College offers several degrees and certificates including cake decorating courses. Cake Decorating classes are available within the following degree and certificate programs:

  • Cake Decorator Marketable Skills Achievement Award: it is a 2-year degree program for aspiring bakers and pastry artists that includes cake decorating classes. The 66-credit program also includes courses in baking pies, tarts, teacakes and cookies. Safety and sanitation issues, chocolates and confections, laminate dough, plated desserts and wedding cakes are also covered. The majority of the classes are held in a practicum setting where students gain experience in actual kitchens.
  • Certificate in Baking and Pastry: Comprised of 42 credits, students gain thorough training in how to bake and decorate cakes of all shapes and sizes. Students in the certificate program also complete a practicum or field internship experience in either baking and pastry arts or a cooperative work experience at a bakery. They must also complete some courses related to business management, such as sanitation and safety methods.
  • Associate of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry: It is a 2-year degree program for aspiring bakers and pastry artists that includes cake decorating classes. The 66-credit program also includes courses in baking pies, tarts, teacakes and cookies. Safety and sanitation issues, chocolates and confections, laminated dough, plated desserts and wedding cakes are also covered. Located in Corpus Christi, Texas, Del Mar College offers an Associate in Applied Science in Baking/Pastry. Taking 5 semesters to finalize, the program contains one cake decorating class, as well as other relevant classes such as plated desserts; advanced pastry shop; and pies, tarts, teacakes and cookies.

St. Philip’s College is situated in San Antonio. The Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts offers an Associate of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry Arts. This degree has three Cake Decorating classes: cake decorating phase I, cake decorating phase II and wedding cakes. The Cake Decorating classes will teach trainees how to prepare different kind of icing and frosting, how to pipe icing decorations onto cakes and how to shape marzipan fruits and chocolate flowers.
