Whether you have a formal dining corner or not, a cozy breakfast nook is one of those little additions that makes a home both more friendly and functional. The perfect nook is a bright and comfortable place for enjoying breakfast and for casual family lunches and dinners. When looking at updating your nook, create a relaxing space where you can enjoy a quick bite or a lingering chat at any time of day. Here are some of our favorite ideas, focused to make the biggest impact. Picture by Aaron Leitz, courtesy of Sutro Architects.
Update light fixtures and furniture
Want to give your nook an instant facelift? Simply replace the accessories like side chairs, light fixtures, or shelves. Stick with the overall style of your home but consider updating the material, color and the size.

When buying accessories for your breakfast nook, buy duplicates of the more impactful items to create an even balance. But feel free experiment with selecting uneven amount of smaller items (like throw vases, pillows). This will create both a symmetrical, and unique, appearance at the same time. Add a dash of color
Our eyes are naturally drawn to light and color. Pick a palette that works well with other colors inside your home and don’t be afraid to go bold. A colorful nook is an instant focal point and there’s nothing better to boost your mood in the morning. Painting a fresh, new color on an old table is not only easy to do in a day, it instantly draws the eyes. Throw a set of colorful cushions while you are at it – it’ll make your benches and banquettes more inviting. Artworks, rugs, and plant pots are another quick done-in-a-day additions that will add splashes of coordinating colors exactly where you want them.
Is your wood or laminate counter cracked? Are your walls in poor shape? Scratches and cracks can be patched to make your surfaces seamless again. Using paintable wallpaper allows you to mask wall imperfections and cracks without headache. With cheap renovation and repair kits, your old nook can turn into a fab chatting area!
